Protecting Chi’chil Bildagoteel: Preserving Our Sacred Ground from Destruction

We must do everything we can to protect Chi’chil Bildagoteel, also known as Oak Flat, from being destroyed by the proposed Resolution Copper Mine.

Chi’chil Bildagoteel is our hallowed ground. It is where our gods reside and where our culture is passed from the past to the present and gives us hope for the future. It is where we go to pray. It is irreplaceable.

Chi’chil Bildagoteel lies within the Tonto National Forest six miles west of the San Carlos Apache Reservation. The site was withdrawn from mining by President Eisenhower. Chi’chil Bildagoteel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Traditional Cultural Property.

Resolution Copper is owned by Anglo-Australian miners Rio Tinto (controls 55%) and BHP (controls 45%). These are two of the largest mining companies in the world. The mine will destroy Chi’chil Bildagoteel.

And it will do nothing for the U.S. renewable energy industry. Instead, we believe Resolution’s copper concentrate will be exported overseas because of a lack of smelting capacity in the United States, most likely to China.
